child sacrifice prevention
Our Child Sacrifice Prevention Programme aims to eliminate child sacrifice by tackling the beliefs and mindsets that are sustaining this horrific practice which still occurs in Uganda.
Child Sacrifice is the killing, mutilation or removal of the body parts of a child for witchcraft, ritual practices or sale. Unfortunately this terrible crime of violence has been increasing in Uganda over the last few years.
The Ugandan Government is taking action to bring this crime to an end. In particular the Anti-sacrifice task force has been set up to investigate and prosecute cases of ritual sacrifice. However, the root causes and beliefs that perpetuate this practice make it extremely difficult to eliminate.
Our Child Sacrifice Prevention Programme aims to eliminate child sacrifice by changing the mindsets and behaviours that are sustaining it. The programme has two objectives;
1. Break the cycle of belief and ensure that future generations do not turn to it
2. Promote a greater understanding of how to protect children from child abduction and sacrifice.
Through 2011 in partnership with UNICEF we delivered our Child Sacrifice Prevention Programme to
36 schools in Uganda, reaching 4,000 pupils, and also to all our communities.
We are doing this through our innovative education and awareness campaign. We have commissioned a short story called “Saving Little Viola”. The book is written by Ugandan writer Oscar Ranzo and illustrated by a Ugandan artist Paul Ikonde. It tells the story of how, through friendship and bravery, a young boy and girl narrowly escape child sacrifice (through an inventive use of mangoes and catapults!). We use the book as the basis for group discussion on child sacrifice and the factors sustaining its practice. Our participatory programme empowers people to take action to raise awareness of the cause and will help them find ways to protect themselves and their families.
We aim to continue to role out the programme through 2012 so we can keep raising awareness helping to prevent young lives from being taken and killed in this horrific way.
